AGRICOLA (Agricultural
Online Access)
AGRICOLA is created by the U.S. National Agricultural Library .
It includes citations about herbs and medicinal plants and includes references
from the Herb Research Foundations' HerbalGram. Production of electronic
records began in 1970, but the database covers materials in all formats,
including print works from the 15th century. Some records are linked to
online full text documents.
Bandolier
Complementary and Alternative Therapies
Bandolier Complementary and Alternative Therapies
provides EBM healthcare related issues to medical professionals
and consumers. Health topics include the nature of evidence, herbal medicine
and supplements, acupuncture, homeopathy, massage, and safety concerns.
The site provides abstracts of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, or other
studies about CAM. The content is ‘tertiary’ publishing, distilling the
information from secondary reviews of primary trials and making it comprehensive.
Currently it contains over 100 summaries on the effectiveness of CAM.
BIOSIS Previews <1969 to 2003>
BIOSIS Previews is a fee-based life sciences and biology database which
indexes 6,000 journals, books, conference proceedings, and technical reports
from 1969 to present. The database is available through the
Ovid search platform.
CAM
on PubMed
CAM on PubMed was developed jointly by NLM &
NCCAM. CAM on PubMed provides journal citations related to complementary
and alternative medicine (CAM). It is a subset of all citations found on
the NLM’s PubMed. The subset contains over 220,000 citations from 1966
to present. Individual citation displays UC e-links to CDL MELVYL web site,
some of which provide direct access to full text of articles.
Cochrane
Collaboration Complementary Medicine Field
Funding was awarded in 1996 to the University
of Maryland Program of Complementary Medicine to establish the Cochrane
Collaboration Complementary Medicine Field. Their main function is to construct
a database of all the known RCTs (published or unpublished, in all language)
that pertain to CAM. Approximately 5800 CAM RCTs and over 230 systematic
reviews have been identified.
The Cochrane
Library
Developed by the Cochrane Collaboration, the
Cochrane Library supplies high quality evidence to inform people providing
and receiving care, and those responsible for research, teaching, funding
and administration at all levels. The database is updated quarterly on
the Internet. The Library consists of Systematic Reviews, Abstracts of
Reviews of Effectiveness, Register of Controlled Trials, the Methodology
Reviews and the Cochrane Methodology Register. The Library contains over
5700 reports of RCTs and over 80 systematic reviews in CAM.
Combined Health Information Database
(CHID)
CHID is produced by health-related agencies of
the Federal Government. The database provides a wealth of health
promotion education materials and program descriptions that are not indexed
elsewhere. CHID is updated four times a year.
FirstGov.gov
FirstGov.gov offers users a centralized place
to locate information from U.S. local, state and federal government agency
web sites. This site provides links to to more than 51 million web pages
from federal and state governments, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.
Most of these pages are not available on commercial web sites.
ICL (Index to Chiropractic
Literature)
This is a free web-based database funded by the Association of Chiropractic
Colleges. Librarians from 13 different chiropractic colleges contributed
to its indexing. This database indexes 41 chiropractic journals using
terms from MeSH and CHIROSH from 1985 to the present.
Integrative
Medicine Communications
Integrative Medicine Communications provides
an extensive database on the clinical use of conventional and alternative
therapies. The web-based clinical tools enable users to easily find
in-depth information on health conditions with relevant treatment options
including medications, surgery, modalities, herbs, and dietary supplements.
Each monograph is fully integrated with a complete cross-reference by interactions,
depletions and practice guidelines where appropriate.
MD Consult:
The online version of "Textbook of Natural
Medicine" is available through the MD Consult Reference Book section. Users
can also easily access practice guidelines and MDC Extra (Studies
that are not indexed in MEDLINE).
Requires access directly from the UCI Libraries web site under Article Databases.
The
Natural Medicine Comprehensive Database
A comprehensive database that provides evidence-based,
clinical information on natural products. It is designed for medical
professions and updated daily. Product Search is available at the top of
every page. It can be browsed or find general data on a selected product.
It can also be searched by scientific name, common name, brand name or
by ingredient. One can access the database directly from the UCI Libraries
Web site under “Article Databases” then select N for Natural Medicine.
Ignore the member login name and password,
and just
click the login button to proceed.
NIH
The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS)
The ODS provides a Web-searchable database of funded research and scientific
papers on dietary supplements. It contains two databases called CARDS and
IBIDS. The International Bibliographic Information on Dietary Supplements
(IBIDS) database provides access to bibliographic citations and abstracts
from published, international, scientific literature on dietary supplements.
Computer Access to Research on Dietary Supplements (CARDS) is a database
of federally funded research projects pertaining to dietary supplements.
OSTMED: The Osteopathic
Literature Database
A bibliographic index to the osteopathic medicine literature. Sponsored
by the American Osteopathic Association and the American Association of
Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, OSTMED is produced by the Gibson D. Lewis
Health Science Library of the University of North Texas Health Science
Center at Fort Worth and the A.T. Still Memorial Library of the Kirksville
College of Osteopathic Medicine.
PEDro (Physiotherapy
Evidence Database)
PEDro is the Physiotherapy Evidence Database. It has been developed
to give rapid access to bibliographic details and abstracts of randomised
controlled trials and systematic reviews in physiotherapy. Most trials
on the database have been rated for quality to help users quickly discriminate
between trials that are likely to be valid and interpretable and those
which are not. Reliability of the PEDro scale for rating quality of randomized
controlled trials has been published in Physical Therapy 83(8):713-21,
2003 August. Abstract can be viewed at http://www.ptjournal.org/info/pt_abs.cfm.
PEDro also contains evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
The
PsycINFO: Your Source for Psychological Abstracts.
An abstract (not full-text) database of psychological literature from
the 1800s to the present. Covers publications (journal articles, book chapters
and books, technical reports, and dissertations) relevant to psychology,
psychotherapy, spirituality, and other CAM related topics.
SciFinder
Scholar:
SciFinder Scholar is one of the largest online
database that provides access to chemistry literature and Chemical
Abstracts. Over 19 million citations to chemistry publications are searchable
by topic, author, CAS Registry Number, patent number, and CAS abstract
number. In some cases, links to the full-text of journal articles are available.
One can also locate chemical synthesis and activity of herbal plants.
Web of Sci.:
Web of Science is a bibliographic database that
covers publications relevant to life sciences and other CAM related topics.

The Umbrella database is a comprehensive listing of medical school
courses, electives, and interest groups relating to complementary, alternative,
and/or integrative medicine. AMSA provides this service as a resource
for the community of local student groups to promote humanism, medical
student well-being and the exploration of healing through holism in medicine.
Alternative
Medicine: Health Care Information Resources
McMaster University Health Sciences Library. This site offers
access to general resources on the WWW in Alternative Medicine. It
provides links to pages that are inclusive, or encyclopedic in nature.

NOAH About: Alternative (Complementary) Medicine
New York Online Access to Health (NOAH) is a project that brought together
the unique assets and experience of four New York partners who have worked
together on a variety of projects for 26 years: the City University of
New York, the Metropolitan New York Library Council, the New York Academy
of Medicine and the New York Public Libary. The goal is to provide
high quality, full-text health information for consumers that is accurate,
timely, relevant and unbiased. NOAH currently supports English and Spanish
languages.
Complementary and
Alternative Medicine
This site developed by the Oregon Health Sciences University, offers
links to various academic institutions and organizations that contain alternative
medicine resources. It also provides links to alternative medicine
journals, specific therapies and resources for students.
MedlinePlus

A well established web site developed by the National Library of Medicine
for health consumers and practitioners. The Alternative Medicine
section provides selected resources from the NCCAM site. It includes
clinical trials on CAM, Specific Conditions/Aspects, National Certification
Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and Directories, Law
and Policy in CAM.
National Center for Complementary
and Alternative Medicine
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
is one of the 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes
of Health (NIH). Their mission is to support rigorous research on
CAM, to train researchers in CAM, and to disseminate information to the
public and professionals on which CAM modalities are effective, which are
not, and why. The site is designed for health practitioners, consumers,
and researchers. Topics include understanding CAM, alerts and advisories,
treatment information, funding opportunities, clinical trials, and latest
news and development on CAM.
The Rosenthal
Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine
The Rosenthal Center’s broad goals are to contribute to the informed
research and practice of complementary and alternative medicine and to
foster the development of a more comprehensive and inclusive medical system.
This site includes research databases, academic centers, government sites,
and electronic journals. Personal resources, such as, mailing lists, anecdotal
information, and advice pages are clearly categorized.
The University
of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center's Complementary/Integrative Medicine
This site contains evidence-based reviews of complementary or alternative
cancer therapies as well as links to other authoritative resources. These
reviews evaluate the designs and the results of published research on herbal,
mind-body, energy, nutrition, and other biological /organic / pharmacological
substances. Detailed scientific reviews are provided to assist health
care professionals in guiding patients who would like to integrate these
therapies with conventional treatments. This site also contains short
summaries of critical information for the general public in both English
and Spanish.
