Notes:
-
Language becomes important when searching any of these databases.
Some give the option to search in either English or Spanish, so use the
language that is apporpriate. Other times you may need to
do 2 searches, one with the English words and one with the Spanish
words. For example, when searching for a book in Spanish but you
do not know the title, try a keyword search first on the English word
(it may be in the subject headings in Engllish) and then do one in
Spanish that might find the word in the Spanish Language title.
- Subject Headings which might prove useful to you:
- Mexican Americans History
- Mexicans New Southwest
- Latin America History to 1830 (broadens out a search and may include sources that include Mexico)
- Sources (to identify primary resources in books). E.g., Mexican Americans history sources
- Try the name of a specific culture or area. E.g. Aztlan
- Note: Begin
with a keyword search to identify some good subject headings, labeled
in ANTPAC as LCSH. This helps provide you new words to add to
your list of subject terms to search.
| Find Journal Articles and other selected resources |
- History Subject Guide
- Latin American Resources
- HAPI Online (HIspanic American Periodicals Index). History is just one of the major topics included.
- Handbook of Latin American Studies
-- Bibliography on Latin America consisting of selected resources
annotated by scholars and dating back to 1970. Select the
language in which you want to search.
- Chicano -- Indexes all types of materials and subjects, including history. Articles date back to 1967
- ClasePeriodica
-- Index to Latin American academic journals and other resources
in the humaities and sciences. Contains bibliographic citations
to books, journals, documents, conference proceedings, interviews and
much more. Many are in Spanish so consider this as you search.
- Chicano/Latino Studies Subject Guide
-- Links to specialized sources in Chicano/Latino Studies. While
many of the resources listed cover periods later than this class is
studying, others can prove useful.
- Women's/Gender/Feminist Studies Subject Guide -- If your topic includes women or gender topics, you may find special guidance to resources here.
- Tutorial on locating primary resources
- Books can
be primary resources in some cases. Use the words in the second
part of the tutorial to help you. Also do an Advanced Search with
keyword (Any Field)search on your topic and add the term "sources" as a
subject.
- History Subject Guide --
Look at the resources for general , multi-field resources.
Though not specifically on Mexico, they may include information on
Mexico.
- U.S. Government History Subject Guide
-- Most government history documents are considered primary
resources. In addition to the online resources, there are indexes
to other resources either in paper in some microform set.
- Archive of Americana -- Search together or separately texts and newspapers of early America.
- Microform resources may
be useful. Some of these can be found in the search for books
above. To limit to microforms, in the Advanced search there is a
box to limit to microform. Do NOT select ANY.
- Note: There is a
computer attached to a microform reader down on the first floor in the
microforms area. By using that you can download, page by page,
from the microfilm/micorfiche onto either a thumb drive or you can burn
a blank CD-ROM. There is no charge for this and you have your own
copy. To print onto paper within the Library using a print card
costs $0.25.
- Online Archive of California
-- Search the subject guides to various special collections in
California. UCI is represented but the other archives and their
collections would have to be visited as the resources do not
loan. A few have some online resources.
- Calisphere
-- Electronic primary resources. One collection is of California
Cultures and another is Hispanic Americans. Quality and age level
can vary.
- Portals to the World, Mexico -- From the Library of Congress, links to web pages about the History of Mexico. Many primary resources.
- Bancroft Library at UCB Digital Collections -- More than one collection features some aspect of California history and cultures.
