Jean Cocteau and the Parisian Avant-Garde

A Conference sposored by the UC Humanities Research Institute, with the School of Fine Arts at UC Irvine, as part of a larger festival celebrating the centenary of Cocteau's birth sponsored by the School of Fine Arts, UC Irvine, and the Severin Wunderman Foundation. The symposium reviewed Cocteau's place within the modern tradition and his role as a mediating figure between the arts of poetry, painting, film, dance, music, and theater design. In addition to the sympsoium, the festival presented a production of Cocteau's Orphée and Le Train Bleu, screenings of Cocteau's films, and an exhibition of his art. The conference was organized by Ann Bermingham, Art History, UC Irvine; Renée Riese Hubert, French and Comparative Literature, UC Irvine; and William Holmes, Music, UC Irvine. Participants included Erik Aschengreen, University of Copenhagen; Dore Ashton, Cooper Union School of Art; Naomi Green, UC Santa Barbara; Annette Shandler Levitt, Drexel University; Neal Oxenhandler, Dartmouth College; Jean Pasler, UC San Diego; and Marjorie Perloff, Stanford University.
