2. Selected Web-Based Indexes and Abstracts

General access to periodical indexes and abstracts is provided through the UCI Libraries Website: Article Databases.  Here you will find an alphabetical listing of all indexes and abstracts available through CDL or licensed directly by the UCI Libraries.  In addition, you can check the CDL list of databases available for History.

The following is a selective listing of indexes most useful for history topics; depending on your topic, you may well need to consult other resources.

Note:

History:

America: History and Life  (AHL) 1964-
The most authoritative listing of periodical literature, book and media reviews, and dissertations in United States and Canadian history.  Covers over 1,700 journals published worldwide.

Search Hints:

Historical Abstracts  (HA)  1955-
The "world's leading historical bibliography" covers the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding North America).  Includes English-language journals (1,700+), books, and disseratations.

Multidisciplinary:

Retrospective

*American Periodical Series Online 1740-1900
Includes digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals published from colonial days to the dawn of the 20th century. Published between 1741 and 1900, the more than 1,000 titles include Benjamin Franklin's General Magazine, the first American professional journals, and several popular magazines still in publication, such as Vanity Fair, Harper's, and Ladies' Home Journal.

PCI: Periodical Contents Index   1770-1995.
An electronic index to the contents of 3,000+ periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, from their first issues to 1995.

Nineteenth Century MasterfileVaries
The  largest resource for pre-1920's studies, with over 6 million citations online. Includes Poole's, William Frederick Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, which indexes books, newspapers, periodicals and government documents on the 19th Century. It is a continually expanding resource for the study of Nineteenth-Century cultural and intellectual life.

Readers Guide Retrospective 1963-1982
Provides searchable access to citations from 523 leading U.S. magazines.

Cover-to-cover  indexing of journal articles, reviews, meeting abstracts, editorials, etc., is provided for more than 7,500 internataional journals covering all disciplines.

*Expanded Academic Index ASAP  1980 - present
Provides multi-disciplinary coverage from arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology; inlcudes scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers - many with full text and images.

Francis1984- present
Produced by Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (INIST-CNRS, a multilingual, multidisciplinary information published in over 4,200 journals covering the humanities (67%), social sciences (30%), and economics (3%). The database is strong in religion, the history of art, psychology, and literature (with particular emphasis on current trends in European and world literature). It contains bilingual (English - French) subject descriptors.

Left Index.  1982- present
Provides access to "the diversity of literature on the left, with a primary emphasis on politically and culturally engaged scholarship inside and outside the academy and a secondary emphasis on significant but little known sources of news and ideas. Topics covered include politics, economics, the labor movement, ecology and environment, women's studies, race and ethnicity, social and cultural theory, sociology, art and aesthetics, philosophy, history, education, law, and globalization."

Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe
Nearly 5,000 publications span news, financial, medical, and legal information, the vast majority available in full text, with a limited number available in abstract form. Covers newspapers, magazines, wire services, federal and state court opinions, federal and state statutes, federal regulations, etc. News information is updated daily and wire services several times daily.

PCI: Periodical Contents Index  1770-1995.
An electronic index to the contents of 3,000+ periodicals in the humanities and social sciences from their first issues to 1995.
 

Citation Indexes:

Part of Web of Science, multidisciplinary databases covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities, social sciences, and sciences. In addition to keyword topic searching, their unique structure allows you to search for articles that cite a known author or work.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index.1976- .

Social Sciences Citation Index.1966- .
 

Disciplinary:

African Studies

African Studies 2000-present
Combination of 17 databases from three continents providing access to  multi-disciplinary information on Africa.  Records are derived from books, periodical articles, pamphlets, maps and music recordings.

Asian Studies

Bibliography of Asian Studies.  1971-present
Contains over 410,000 records on all subjects (especially humanities and social sciences) pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia Association for Asian Studies [via Association for Asian Studies]

Magazine Plus   coverage varies
Published by the National Diet Library of Japan and Nichigai Associates, covers 8,500 scholarly journals in various fields and general interest periodical titles, and provides bibliographical references to 4,850,000 articles from 1975 to the present. It also includes bibliographic information for 6,000 reports and thesis in the areas of humanity and social science published in academic journals from 1945 to the present.
Note: Requires Japanese software. Recommended: latest versions of Microsoft IE with Japanese Global IME (available at http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/iebuild/ime5_win32/en/ime5_win32.htm) or Netscape Communicator with additional front-end processors (FEP).

Chicano-Latino Studies and Latin American Studies

Chicano Database    1967-
The Chicano database contains records for all types of materials in the areas of Mexican-American topics, and since 1992, materials on other Latino cultures--e.g., Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Central American immigrants. Subject coverage includes art, language, sociology, public policy, economics, history, literature, politics, and law.

The Handbook of  Latin American Studies/HLAS Online   1935-
Contains citations in the area of Latin American studies from journals, books, and conferences in the humanities and social sciences including history.Many citations in the database are annotated.

Hispanic American Periodical Index/HAPI Online  1970-
Produced by the UCLA Latin American Center, provides citations about Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean basin, the U.S.-Mexico border region, and Hispanics in the U.S. indexed from articles and other materials.

Ethnic Studies

*Ethnic NewsWatch   1960- present
Full-text general reference database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press covering both current and historical topics.

French Studies

ARTFL Project
Project for American and French research on the treasury of the French language. ARTFL is a cooperative project of the Institut national de la langue francaise (INaLF) of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) and the Divisions of the Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Chicago. A full-text retrieval database of classical French writings, the database includes literary works, political tracts, philosophical writings, and technical treatises.

History of Science

History of Science, Technology and Medicine  1976-present
Contains citations from journal articles, conference proceedings, books, book reviews, and dissertations in the history of science, the history of  technology, the history of medicine, and allied historical fields in a variety of languages.

Medieval and Renaissance Studies

Iter: Gateway to the Renaissance   1843-present
A bibliography of more than 225,000 articles and reviews drawn from over 300 medieval and renaissance journal titles (Middle Ages and Renaissance; 400-1700). The database is updated daily and with more than 60,000 new records added annually.

Russian/Slavic Studies

The Russian Academy of Sciences Bibliographies   1986-present
Describes material on the social sciences and humanities published in the Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe - books, manuscripts, dissertations, and articles from more than 10,000 periodicals. More than 658,000 records cover from 1992 to the present, with bimonthly updates.

Women's Studies

*GenderWatch     1970 - present
Full text database of publications that focus on the impact of gender across a broad spectrum of subject areas. Publications include academic and scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, regional publications, books, booklets and pamphlets, conference proceedings, and government, NGO and special reports.

*Gerritsen Collection, Women's History Online, 1543-1945
Women's history in the world from 1543 to 1945. 4,700 publications from Europe, the U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand, tracing the evolution feminism within a single country, as well as the impact of one country's movement on those of the others.  Includes books, pamphlets, and periodicals.

*Sexual Diversity Studies  1977 (and earlier)-present
Contains scholarly as well as popular print, electronic, and Internet publications of the GLBT press. Most topics of interest to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities are covered in depth. Of paramount  importance is the coverage of history, culture, social issues, interests, and concerns of the GLBT community.

Women’s Resources International    (WRI) 1972-
Includes over 232,000 records drawn from a variety of essential women's studies databases including Women Studies Abstracts (1984- ; approx. 35,000 records) and the Women’s Studies Database (1972- ; approx. 70,300 records drawn from 125 journals worldwide).

Provides citations (often with full-text)  to Christian Science Monitor, LA Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post.

National Newspaper Index.  1977 - present
Provides quick access to the indexing of America's top five newspapers in one seamless search: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post.

Global NewsBank   1996-present
News articles covering politics, economics, culture, business, science, technology, and the environment from  Africa, Asia, Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Pacific Rim, Central and South America, and the Middle East.  All articles are in English and are from over 1000 translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, wireservices, newspapers, magazines and government documents.  This product has a Source List.

Noticias en Español
News articles covering social, economic, environmental, government, sports, health, science, cultural, and  business issues and events in the United States, Latin America, and the world from international news services  and U.S. Spanish-language newspapers. The entire product is in Spanish. This product has a Source List.
