2. Finding DVDs, Videos and Films at UCI: ANTPAC Catalog and Humanities Instructional Media Center (HIRC)

2.1. ANTPAC Featured Lists: Browsing by title

New Books, Videos, E-Resources
Note: Videos on page 3.
The "New Books, Videos, E-Resources" page provides lists of newly cataloged materials in each library organized by call number. Besides new acquisitions, this page includes a title listing of the DVDs and videos in each library and a listing of newly catalogued titles for the past three (3) months from the Langson Library Multimedia Resources Center.

2.2. ANTPACCatalog: Search strategies for media titles of interest

2.2.1. Limit to media at the outset of your search:

Select Collection: Film and Video Collection
Keyword or Subject Heading* Search
2.2.2. Search by keyword(s), for example, or subject heading then limit results to media: Note: 2.3. Humanities Instructional Resource Center (HIRC)

The HIRC, located in  Humanities Hall Room 269, provides some Media Resources "reserved for the benefit of Humanities courses and limited to the HIRC's standard hours of operation (Monday-Thursday 8-7pm and Fridays 8am-5pm). Most equipment is available on a "will call" basis- that is for pick up and return by the instructor or a designated student to and from HH 269. AV equipment can be ordered through email."

Searchable database of the HIRC media library is available on the HIRC web site.

3. Finding DVDs, Videos and Films in Other Libraries: Melvyl UC and WorldCat Catalogs

Note:

3.1. Melvyl UC Catalog

The Melvyl Catalog database contains over 23,000,000 records, including books, periodicals or journal titles, and many other types of materials including films, videos, and DVDs. Melvyl allows you to browse records, save and mail items to your email account, set up a profile and Workspace so that you can save records and searches across sessions, and have email Updates automatically sent to you.

The Melvyl Catalog does have several separate component collections, but unfortunately, none of these are film/video like in ANTPAC.

Search strategies for media:

3.2. WorldCat
Records from the worldwide OCLC Online Union Catalog for books and many other types of materials including media in a variety of languages.  Access to hundreds of library collections around the world.  You may save and email results.

Search strategies for media:

3.3. Other Library Catalogs

5. Reviews

5.1. Film Reviews (from Film Studies Subject Guide, see #6 below)

Note: Film reviews published in The New York Times and Variety (and other newspapers) are available online in full text through LexisNexisTM Academic, but only since June 1, 1980, for The Times and April 27, 1992, for Variety. Global NewsBank (1996- ) is another good source for film reviews published in less common domestic newspapers, journals, or international publications, but also tends to work best for more recent films. For older film reviews the print indexes below are your best bet (for now) for authoritative reviews.

5.2. Article Databases

Some article databases index film and media reviews; the following is a selective list of possibilities with sample search strategies.

America: History and Life
limit to document type media review

Ebsco Academic Search Premier (currently on TRIAL ONLY)
www.ebscohost.com
use Advanced Search,  keyword default fields then scroll down to limit to document type Entertainment Review

Expanded Academic ASAP
use phrase movie review in keyword search
